Although 90 Day Fiancé viewers love their content, even the most ardent fan can be pushed past their breaking point by making them jump through an ever-increasing series of hoops. With the recent launch of Discovery Plus, fans of the 90 Day Fiancé franchise feel betrayed as their beloved content continues to migrate to the fledgling streaming service, and they’re not shy about voicing their resentment.
Discovery Plus was announced on December 2, 2020, as the latest streaming service to corral content from multiple networks into a single package. “Our ambition is simple: bring consumers the definitive and most complete destination for real life entertainment at a price point that makes this the perfect companion for every household’s streaming and TV portfolio,” President and CEO of Discovery, Inc., David Zaslav commented. The new service includes the incredibly popular 90 Day Fiancé franchise. In addition to the existing series, six new spin-offs are planned to launch in January and February, including The Other Way Strikes Back!, 90 Day Fiancé: Love Games, and 90 Day Bares All, which is said to replace the popular tell-all episodes that used to air at the end of each 90 Day Fiancé season. The new service costs $4.99/month for the basic version and $6.99/month for the commercial-free version. Fans overladen with streaming services are not happy to have to shell out extra dollars.
Fans on Reddit haven’t held back about their hatred of the new streaming service. “No f****** way we’re buying discovery plus, tons of people are mad that they have to pay to see Pillow Talk now,” one vented. “You had loyal fans and you betrayed them. Also, WE 👏🏼 WANT👏🏼 OUR 👏🏼 TELL - ALLS 👏🏼 BACK!!!” Between Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, and more, viewers are experiencing streaming fatigue across a number of networks. For many 90 Day Fiancé fans, Discovery Plus is the straw that broke the camel’s back. “I am not paying for another damn streaming service. And I mean it,” one commenter posted, echoing the sentiments of many others who feel enough is enough with the streaming services. Many fans feel Discovery Plus could be the death knell to the 90 Day Fiancé franchise. “They're going to kill the goose that laid the golden egg,” one lamented, while others criticized the streaming platform itself and the new content that has been teased.
Of course, not all fans are against the new streaming service. Many fans who like Discovery Plus seem to come from outside the US. “YES i would pay for it IF I COULD!” said one fan in Canada, while another insisted that Discovery Plus is for more than just 90 Day Fiancé fans. They said, “Of course you’re going to feel scammed if you’re paying that much just to watch 90 day content, but the full catalog and diversity of content is very worth the price.” Other commenters also argued Discovery Plus was a good option for those who don’t want to pay for cable television when they only watch a few channels.
The fandom of 90 Day Fiancé is clearly divided on the new streaming platform, despite the promises of new content. TLC may be seeing just the beginning of a bigger backlash to the Discovery Plus launch.
90 Day Fiancé airs Sundays at 8 pm ET on TLC.
