Marik Ishtar is one of the most iconic villains in both Yu-Gi-Oh! and anime history, and it's easy to see why. He's a horrible person until he's able to atone for what he's done after the Battle City arc concludes.
Marik commits atrocity after atrocity even when he's not under the control of Yami Marik, his (even) darker side. While he eventually does do his best to make up for what he's done, the evils he commits cannot be undone. While Marik has done plenty of awful things, there are a few that trump all of the others.
10 Murder His Father
While it is cut out of the dub, Yami Marik does kill his father in the original anime and manga. Yami Marik was born out of resentment for Marik's father and his role as a tombkeeper, so it makes sense that Yami Marik would target the source of Marik's anger when he was first born.
While Marik didn't remember killing his father after he came to, it was his first act in a line of horrible tragedies. From there, he took the Millennium Rod and began his journey.
9 Betray Ishizu
Ishizu, Marik's older sister, loved her brother deeply. She did her best to prevent him from giving in to his evil side, but she was unable to do so. While Marik didn't go so far as to kill her as he did their father, he did strike her down during the first appearance of Yami Marik.
Ishizu persisted, however, and was able to secure Obelisk the Tormentor before Marik was able to get his hands on it, which would become instrumental in his undoing.
8 Plan To Kill Odion
Once Yami Marik was released during the Battle City finals, he planned to kill Odion to ensure that his plan could not be interfered with. While Yami Marik truly is an embodiment of evil, killing one of the two people that Marik is closest to in the world is an absolutely horrific act to commit.
Luckily, he was stopped due to his number being called to duel in the finals. Don't worry though, he did something awful in that duel, but more on that later.
7 Force Odion To Play Ra
Odion was lined up for a win against Joey in their duel during the Battle City finals, but the plan to trick everyone into thinking that Odion was Marik was falling apart. In order to keep the ruse going, Marik ordered Odion to play the copied Winged Dragon of Ra card to defeat Joey.
Ra struck both duelists down as a result of the counterfeit card. Marik knew the risks associated with playing the card and chose to endanger Odion's life anyway.
6 Force His Other Servants To Play Ra
Marik wasn't just cruel to Odion, he was cruel to all of his Rare Hunters. He forced his Rare Hunters to play the copied versions of The Winged Dragon of Ra, knowing very well what would happen to them.
All of the Rare Hunters who tried playing the card (which they were instructed to do as Marik was trying to perfect a copy that wouldn't result in death) died, and Marik didn't care. They were disposable to him.
5 Almost Killing Tea, Joey, And Yugi
The mind-controlled Joey duel on the dock between him and Yugi was incredibly dangerous. Both of the duelists and Tea, who was also being mind-controlled by Marik, almost died.
Tea had a crate being dangled over her head that could kill her at any moment, and Joey and Yugi were both attached to anchors that would drag them to the bottom of the ocean if they lost. All of them could have died if the circumstances were even slightly different than what ended up happening.
4 What He Did To Mai
While Mai didn't die from The Winged Dragon of Ra's attack due to Yugi deflecting much of the damage, she was still sent to the Shadow Realm when she lost to Marik (even though she only lost because of plot armor).
He trapped her in an hourglass where she slowly lost memories of her friends, one by one, which was what she feared the most. It was absolutely horrible to watch and showed that he just wanted to torture her for the fun of it.
3 Forsaking The Pharaoh
One of the worst things that Marik did was simply forsaking the Pharaoh to begin with.
It was his sacred duty to serve the Pharaoh, and while his life wasn't great because of it, him leaving his duties sent off a chain reaction of absolutely horrible things that all could have been avoided. Unfortunately, he just couldn't take it anymore.
2 Lying To Arkana
Arkana served Marik because he was told that his ex-lover, Catherine, would be reunited with him if he managed to defeat Yugi in a duel.
In the end, it was revealed that Arkana had been deceived, and Marik had no intentions of reuniting the magician with his former assistant and lover. However, this is far from the worst thing Marik ever did.
1 Unleashed The Egyptian God Cards On The World
The worst thing that Marik ever did was unleash the God Cards and their wrath onto the world.
Because he stole two of them, Ishizu was forced to give the third one to Seto Kaiba in order to use it to defeat Marik. If he had left the God Cards alone, the stakes of the Battle City arc would have been much less world-ending than they ended up becoming. Unfortunately, Marik simply wanted too much power.
