The Mandalorian: 5 Characters We Want To See In Season 3 (& 5 That Should Stay Away)

With each passing season, The Mandalorian seems to keep getting better and better. Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau weave the complexities of the Star Wars franchise into an accessible tableau, bringing in references from George Lucas's movies and the animated series to obscure comics, video games, and even Star Wars Legends.

While the first season focused more on establishing a galaxy full of everyday citizens just trying to make their way among the stars, the second season started connecting Din Djarin and Grogu with major characters from the Prequel Era and the Skywalker saga. With so many new opportunities expanding the fates of Mando, Grogu, as well as their enemies and allies, there are certain characters fans want to see returning for Season 3, and some they'd just as soon leave behind.

10 Want To See: Grogu

It's hard to believe that Grogu and Mando have been separated, but as of the end of Season 2, the pair will be apart for the foreseeable future. Fans have been left wondering how the series will continue now that one of its biggest stars has gone to train with famed Jedi Master Luke Skywalker.

Grogu could potentially be seen learning to harness his Force powers under Skywalker's watchful eye, or perhaps the unthinkable happens, and he gets kidnapped again, leaving Mando no choice but to come and rescue him.

9 Should Stay Away: Cara Dune

While Cara Dune has been a helpful part of Din Djarin's team, his story in the next season won't require her services if it takes him to Mandalore and he has the help of Bo-Katan and her cohort. She ultimately has a choice to make herself; either follow him or remain a Marshal of the New Republic.

Including Dune at this point would make her a hanger-on and an afterthought. If Season 3 decides to focus on Mandalorian politics, lore, and concerns, there won't be much for her to do.

8 Want To See: Bo-Katan

Fan favorite and Clone Wars alum Bo-Katan has been a welcome addition to the series, and fans have been curious about how her mission to free Mandalore will evolve now that Din Djarin has the darksaber. The Mandalorian doesn't seem all that interested in becoming the leader of the ravaged planet, but neither can Bo-Katan claim her legacy without defeating him in battle for the coveted weapon.

It's possible she will grow increasingly angry and frustrated with him, enough to even track down Grogu, and force Mando to duel her with the small creature's life in the balance. She's already proven she'll stop at nothing to see Mandalore restored to its former glory.

7 Should Stay Away: Boba Fett

Boba Fett made arguably one of the most impactful reappearances of any popular canon character, and fans who had waited decades to see the world's most famous bounty hunter in all his live-action glory were not disappointed. It was a joy watching Din Djarin and Boba Fett work together to find Grogu and learn more about what Fett had been up to since escaping the Sarlacc Pit.

But Fett's got bigger Colo claw fish to fry. He's fulfilled his debt to Mando and based on the end credits scene after the Season 2 finale, Fett is going to be plenty busy running his own criminal empire out of Jabba's Palace in The Book of Boba Fett.

6 Want To See: Moff Gideon

Moff Gideon appeared late in Season 1, and only became really interesting halfway through Season 2, with the inclusion of the Dark Trooper subplot. The franchise has always been known for cultivating memorable villains, but Gideon hasn't had enough screen time to cement himself as one of the galaxy's most feared.

Clearly resourceful, cunning, and devious, there's no doubt fans haven't seen the last of him. He seems to be the apex of the Imperial Remnant shown in the series so far, and though he claims to have gotten all he needs from Grogu's body, there would be many other reasons to bring him back in Season 3, especially if he decides to wage a personal vendetta against Din Djarin.

5 Should Stay Away: Other Major Franchise Characters

The return of Luke Skywalker in the Season 2 finale showed fans that even the most prestigious characters from the Original Trilogy could be included in the story, making it feel less about highlighting the ordinary citizens of the galaxy and more about tying it into a more important storyline.

In order for the series to stand on its own in Season 3, it will need to not rely on appearances from famous faces in the franchise. However tempting it might be to include a young Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, or Princess Leia, this should be resisted (especially if it wants to distance itself from the Skywalker saga).

4 Want To See: The Children Of The Watch & Protectors of Concord Dawn

The Children of the Watch have been established as religious zealots by Bo-Katana label which forced Din Djarin to question everything he knew about his formative years raised as a foundling in their midst. Their unwavering devotion to The Way (including never removing their helmets) may have cut him off from knowing the truth about their part in the Mandalorian Civil War.

Coming across more of them would test his loyalties and give him even more character development. So would running into the Mandalorian Protectors of Concord Dawn, led by Fenn Rau (a fan favorite from Star Wars: Rebels). Concord Dawn is the famous homeworld of none other than Boba Fett's father, Jango Fett, who fought against the Death Watch, a terrorist group that may have evolved into the Children of the Watch

3 Should Stay Away: Ahsoka Tano

Former Jedi Ahsoka Tano made a sensation appearing in Season 2, and though she couldn't train Grogu, she pointed Mando and his tiny teammate in the direction of someone who could. But her path didn't lie with the pair, and while fans were glad to see her, they shouldn't expect a repeat performance.

With the announcement of Star Wars: Ahsoka, it's clear that the character will be receiving her own spin-off series, which no doubt will see her continuing her mission; to locate Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger.

2 Want To See: Grand Admiral Thrawn

While fans were fortunate to see several familiar faces from all corners of the franchise, one name was mentioned without a physical accompaniment; Grand Admiral Thrawn. First introduced in Timothy Zahn's "Heir to the Empire" novels (often called the "Thrawn trilogy"), and finally made canon in the final two seasons of Star Wars: Rebels, Thrawn has yet to appear in live-action form.

As one of the most popular characters outside of the movies, and the only alien to serve in the Empire, he should be given the entrance he deserves. Many fans would be happy if his voice actor, Lars Mikkelsen did the honor of depicting him in the flesh, though there's a long list of other contenders for the role.

1 Should Stay Away: Luke Skywalker

Few fans could have predicted the appearance of none other than the face of Star Wars itself, Luke Skywalker, in the final episode of Season 2. Many have been waiting decades to see post Return of the Jedi Master Skywalker at the height of his powers, totally attuned to the Force with all the grace of Master Yoda and the strength of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

While some fans nitpicked the use of CGI to recreate a young version of Skywalkerthe general sentiment has continued to be one of awe and acclaim. Rather than see Luke in a few cameos in Season 3, he should simply be given his own series depicting how he trains Grogu, resurrects the Jedi Order, and how the process makes him become the sort of homicidal cynic he is in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
