The Fantastic Four includes some of Marvel’s most powerful superheroes. Few bad guys would want to go up against the Thing’s unbelievable strength, the Invisible Woman’s force fields, Mr. Fantastic’s brain, or the Human Torch’s flame powers. In one alternate universe, however, a new team member can mimic all of the original Fantastic Four’s powers!
The universe in question is the MC2 Universe, an alternate future where several heroes have had children eager to follow in their parents’ footsteps (or even break bad by becoming villains). However, some kids – like the Human Torch’s son Torus – have power sets that put their parents to shame.
Torus’ origin began when alien Skrulls kidnapped the Thing’s girlfriend Alicia Masters during the original Secret Wars event and replaced her with a spy named Lyja. Lyja was tasked with infiltrating the Fantastic Four and feeding the Skrull Empire inside information. However, when she learned that the Thing had chosen to remain on an alien planet at the end of the Secret Wars, Lyja realized her mission was in jeopardy. To justify remaining with the Fantastic Four, Lyja (still disguised as Alicia) began seducing Johnny Storm. To her surprise, however, she developed genuine feelings for the Human Torch and the two were later married. Their marriage lasted quite some time, but eventually the Fantastic Four discovered Lyja’s true identity and Johnny rejected her. Lyja would go on to sacrifice herself for Johnny, proving she really loved him, and would be resurrected in later storylines.
In the alternate future of the MC2 Universe, Johnny and Lyja reconciled and remarried. Lyja even became a full member of the Fantastic Four (which renamed itself the Fantastic Five when Reed and Sue’s son Franklin joined the team) and operated under the codename “Ms. Fantastic.” Her shapeshifting powers proved valuable to the group, and she was accepted not only by the Fantastic Four but by the general public. However, what got most readers’ attention was the revelation that Johnny and Lyja now had a son!
Torus Storm is a green-haired, pointy-eared preteen who had the incredible luck to inherit both his father’s flame powers and his mother’s shapeshifting abilities. Thanks to these inborn powers, Torus can throw fireballs from his hands; he can stretch his alien-human body like Mr. Fantastic; he can shapeshift into an adult form (which he calls “Super-Storm”) with extra muscles that grant him enhanced strength; and while he can’t actually turn invisible like the Invisible Woman, his Skrull powers do give him camouflage abilities that can hide him from plain sight.
In many ways, Torus is a heroic version of the Super-Skrull, a villain who could also wield all of the Fantastic Four’s abilities. However, this young hero has one problem – although he’s dying to make his debut as the newest member of the Fantastic Five, both his father and mother have decided he’s not ready for active duty just yet. While he gets to train with the team, Torus – who may very well be the Fantastic Five’s most powerful future member – is regularly sidelined. As a result, Torus (who inherited much of his father’s cockiness) uses his powers to play pranks on his Uncle Ben.
Fans did get to see Torus (as “Super-Storm”) take his place among the superheroes in Spider-Girl: The End, which depicted a grim future where Carnage symbiotes ran amok, requiring an adult Torus to protect people with his fire and shape-shifting powers. Fortunately, this future was averted, although this means the preteen son of the Human Torch will have to wait a few more years before joining the future Fantastic Four.
