There are many movie releases to look forward to in 2021 - but Spider-Man 3 is shaping up to be one of the best. Talk is rife that Tom Holland will be joined by past Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, for his latest big-screen outing. There are also rumors aplenty that Thomas Hayden Church, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone, and Charlie Fox will be reprising their roles too.
While fans are certainly excited for what happens next, it's time to get nostalgic about the eight movies the web-slinger has been in so far. So, having trawled through some trivia and research, fans may be interested to discover the quirkiest fact about each movie.
8 Spider-Man (2002): Hugh Jackman Was Going To Play Wolverine
Not going to lie, it's pretty hard imagining 2002's Spider-Man with Wolverine. That movie is all about how Peter Parker gets his powers, with the webhead having to battle the villainous Green Goblin while also trying to keep his grades up. There seems to be little room for Wolverine given everything else that goes on but, according to Hugh Jackman, everybody's favorite beast was going to make an appearance.
He told The Huffington Post: “In the first “Spider-Man” — Kevin Feige reminded me of this — we really tried to get me to come on and do something, whether it was a gag or just to walk through the shot or something. The problem was, we couldn’t find the suit. The suit was stuck in something. And so when they were in New York when I was there, we couldn’t get it together.” So it all fell apart because of a suit. That's certainly a missed opportunity.
7 Spider-Man 2 (2004): Tobey Maguire Nearly Missed Out
Even now, all these years on, Spider-Man 2 is widely considered to be one of the best superhero movies in existence. The story is superb, with Peter Parker having to live with the loss of his powers while Doctor Octopus goes on a rampage in New York. Harry Osborn turns on his friend following the death of his father Norman, while Mary Jane Watson bounces back from Peter's rejection by finding a new boyfriend in John Jameson.
However, Maguire very nearly missed out. A back injury came close to ruling him out of the blockbuster and Jake Gyllenhaal, speaking in 2019, opened up on the affair.
"The truth of the matter is, in the end, he's (Maguire) Spider-Man," he said. "There are so many roles in my career where I was up against another actor, or something happened that possibly could've happened but didn't happen but maybe it would have... Eventually, my belief is when an actor's played a character, particularly in a movie, the character's theirs, and that's that. But yeah he hurt himself and there was talk. And there was a slew of actors (possibly up for the part), and I was one of them."
6 Spider-Man 3 (2007): Kirsten Dunst's Screams Were Recycled
Released in 2007, Spider-Man 3 was one of the biggest box office hits of the year, despite being plagued by problems. Kirsten Dunst's Mary-Jane needed rescuing for the third movie on the trot, and rather unusually, all of her screams were actually recycled from previous movies.
Having survived brushes with the Green Goblin and Doc Ock, her peril is cranked up several notches for the final chapter of the trilogy. She has to face Peter while he's controlled by the Symbiote, is manipulated by Harry Osborn, and then gets kidnapped by deadly duo Venom and Sandman for the final battle. As a result, lots of screaming went on. After spending the first two movies screeching as loud as she could, Dunst was spared from doing that hardship a third time around.
5 The Amazing Spider-Man (2012): Rhys Ifans Did His Research
Sony decided to reboot things with The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone cast as leads, Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy respectively. However, there was a decision to bring Rhys Ifans into the fold as Dr Curt Connors, AKA The Lizard. As many fans know, Connors was revealed to have a disability after his right arm had to be amputated after he was injured in a wartime blast. Ifans decided that he would conduct his own research ahead of stepping into the iconic lab coat.
As a result, Ifans met several handicapped people in preparation and performed his daily activities using only his left hand for a month. He revealed this during an interview with HeyUGuys and it's clear from the footage that Ifans was excited about playing the villain. Ultimately, though, it was his only appearance in the franchise - with the character missing from the sequel.
4 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014): Andrew Garfield Injured His Heel
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 saw Andrew Garfield reprise his role as Peter Parker. Peter in this movie is pretty down in the dumps, with his relationship with Gwen Stacy on one minute and off the next. And Garfield had reason to be unhappy himself, with the actor’s foot getting run over by a Taxi during filming.
“You can see a little facial recognition of that just as I’m about to step onto the pavement. Literally, a tire smacked my heel. It was really scary,” he said of the incident. Fortunately, he was able to make it through unscathed. And, given it’s New York, everyone will recommend him being extra careful in the future. If he is indeed returning for Spider-Man 3, he’d best take extra care when it comes to crossing the road…
3 Spider-Man Homecoming (2017): Peter Parker Doesn't Throw A Single Punch
Yep, you read that right. Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland's version of Peter Parker pushed to the limits. He has to juggle his school life with being a superhero, while attempting to earn the trust and respect of Tony Stark. To make matters worse Adrian Toomes, AKA the Vulture, is on a mission to retrieve some of Stark's tech so he can fashion himself some deadly items to use for his villainous schemes - as you do.
But Peter doesn't throw a single punch, despite this going on. He kicks, he uses gadgets, he sometimes even uses his powers to throw two people into each other but he doesn't fight with any aggression whatsoever. And, knowing that, it makes his victory at the end of the movie all the more impressive.
2 Into The Spider-Verse (2018): Stan Lee Is In Nearly Every Train
Stan Lee tragically passed away in 2018 but, before that, he filmed a brief cameo in animated blockbuster Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. He plays the role of a store owner who sells all sorts of Spider-Man gear. But the makers of the movie wanted to pay tribute to the Marvel legend even more, so decided to include him in nearly every train that appears.
This was revealed by The New York Times writer Kyle Buchanan, who tweeted: "Talked to the INTO THE SPIDERVERSE directors, who issued a challenge to viewers once they get their hands on the Blu ray: Since every animator was eager to animate Stan Lee, the late Marvel mastermind is actually an extra in several crowd shots." If you've not checked this out yet, we'd definitely recommend it.
1 Spider-Man Far From Home (2019): Samuel L. Jackson Made Marvel History
Samuel L. Jackson is in the movie, but he's not playing Nick Fury. Instead. he's playing Skrull Talos, who is impersonating the S.H.I.E.L.D agent while the real version chills in space somewhere on a secret mission. However, while Jackson isn't Fury, he still made Marvel history nonetheless.
Having previously appeared in Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, it was his third consecutive MCU appearance. Furthermore, with all movies being released within 12 months of each other, it also meant Jackson was the first person to appear in three MCU movies in a single year. That won't be the last we see of the character, either, and we're intrigued to see what happens next in his story.
