DC's Future State Is Almost Here: What Fans Can Expect

Arguably one of those most anticipated events of its time; DC's Future State has been creating a world of hype leading up to its impending release in January. Fans have been lucky enough to receive in-depth timelines, previews of new characters, and even small teasers as to what's to come during this line-wide, two-month event. So what else is there that readers should be privy to in preparation for Future State's roll out?

DC released a timeline that maps out when titles are going to be taking place in the future-set string of events; helping readers get a preliminary understanding of the who, what, when, and where of the comics coming to the shelves in the start of the new year. This timeline includes the different decades and years that the Future State takes place, but also lists out the names of the comics which take place during each of those time periods. So, here is a summary of what readers can expect from each title in DC's repertoire, what kind of releases to look forward to, and even an idea of what this event could mean for the future of DC as a whole.

There are three categories of comics to be released during this event: oversized comics, monthly miniseries, and one-shots. The stories told across these comics will feature both continuations of storylines from series such as the Death Metal arc, as well as new stories that will be born from the aftermath of such events. Here's what's on the lineup.

For fans of The Bat and those in his inner circle, Future State is set to be quite the whirlwind for both readers and residents of Gotham City alike. Set in a dystopian future where Gotham has been overturned and overrun by the seedy, villainous underbelly Batman fought so hard to keep at bay for years, Bruce Wayne himself has seemingly been killed (or has he?) and a new Batman has taken the reigns to bring peace and order back to the civilians of Gotham City. Of course, as always, our new Batman will not fight the evil Magistrate regime alone, he'll have some familiar names to help guard Gotham alongside him.

On the docket for The Bat Family and their future are two oversized comics Future State: The Next Batman (#1-4) and Future State: Dark Detective (#1-4); as well as five monthly miniseries Future State: Batman/Superman, Future State: Catwoman, Future State: Harley Quinn, Future State: Nightwing, and Future State: Robin Eternal.

What does the future have in store for a man and a family who are known to far outlive the average human and weather the test of time against all odds? Well, according to DC, in the not too distant future, Superman will find himself an outcast from the world he's grown to call his home, and instead be cast away to a warring world in which he, as is his nature, is out to topple a great evil which plagues it. Back on earth it seems his son Jon will take the reins as The Man of Steel, his actions leading him to be at odds with Supergirl. This all happens many years before fans will get a look at what the whole of the House of El looks like a century from now. Meanwhile, Mister Miracle will find himself as a binding agent for two of the oversized comics in this category, possibly facing what could be his ultimate demise.

Of course, that's not all. The Superman Family releases will also introduce readers to a new Wonder Woman, an Amazon from the actual Amazon, Yara Flor. She will become key in a plot to join forces that is sure to be unlike any Superman-Wonder Woman team up readers have ever seen before: one for a new era of superheroes.

The Superman slate will bring fans three oversized comics with Future State: Superman of Metropolis (#1-2), Future State: Superman: War of Worlds (#1-4), and Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman (#1-2); and six miniseries or one-shots, including Future State: House of El (one-shot), Future State: Kara Zor-El, Future State: Legion of Super-Heroes, Future State: Superman/Wonder Woman, Future State: Superman vs. Imperious Lex (three issue series), and Future State: Wonder Woman.

The Justice League line-up is set to be quite the doozy considering it encompasses so many different heroes and titles beneath the DC umbrella. The comics coming out under this domain will be peppered throughout a vast majority of Future State's timeline and feature a new and mysterious Justice League, a reality where the Justice League Dark is being hunted, a tormented Flash Family, a Teen Titans academy under attack, Shazam facing the aftermath of a decision that could change him forever, Aquaman's daughter and Aqualad being split up, the remaining Green Lanterns being stranded off-world, and the reveal of Amanda Waller's ultimate plan. So there'll be a lot going on.

Additionally, far, far, far into the future, readers will get a chance to see what Swamp Thing has really been planning for the world he's inhabited for millennia... and it seems as if Black Adam might just be both humanity's and the whole multiverse's only hope at the end of time itself. Will the remnants of humanity be able to rebel in time to save the world, the universe, and the whole of the multiverse? For now that answer is unknown, but readers are sure to be anxiously awaiting what fate has been written for DC's beloved Justice League heroes, as well as their families, allies, and even their enemies.

Here's what's to come for the Justice League Family Future State lineup: three oversized comics including Future State: Justice League (#1-2), Future State: Green Lantern (#1-2), and Future State: Suicide Squad (#1-2); in addition there will be five monthly miniseries compromising of Future State: Aquaman, Future State: The Flash, Future State: Teen Titans, Future State: SHAZAM!, and Future State: Swamp Thing.

With all of the issues set to roll out during this event, it'd be hard to argue that DC isn't prepped to provide enough content to keep the entirety of its fan base engaged in the months to come. How they end up tying all of these titles and stories together across time and space will be extremely interesting. Weaving them all in conjunction with each other will be no easy feat or simple undertaking on the part of the writers and artists who were brought on for this.

Consequently, integrating the ramifications of this event into the regularly scheduled comics set to resume in March will be another extreme venture on the part of DC. The most pertinent question on many fans minds right now would surely be, will all of this hype be worth it? Will this event of epic proportions play out to be as grandiose, important, and all-encompassing as DC has marketed it to be? It definitely seems like Future State's action-packed, character-driven, and highly-anticipated content has the potential to cause some grand implications in every corner of the DC universe. But only time will tell what the future really holds.
