Batman's Greatest Strength Is Also His Greatest Weakness

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Detective Comics #1033 from Peter J. Tomasi and Brad Walker

In the latest issue of DC Comics' Detective Comics, Batman comes to the realization that his greatest strength is his family. However, that doesn't mean that Batman's family is without its struggles or challenges. They can also be used against the Dark Knight, as seen in this issue where several of his family members have been taken hostage by Tommy Elliot, Batman's childhood friend who became the maniac known as Hush. The loss of family is even creating a painful rift with his son.

In Detective Comics' current story arc, Batman is trying to combat something a lot more challenging than his usual foes like Penguin or Scarecrow. Instead, Batman and his family are facing rising sentiments against them. Many people in Gotham no longer want vigilantes active in their city at all, calling on Batman to unmask and reveal his identity to the world. During a subsequently large riot that Batman and his family tried to contain, several of Batman's allies were drugged and taken captive by Hush, who fully intended to cut them all into pieces to sell their organs to hospitals all over Gotham.

Batman ends up forming a temporary truce with his wayward son Damian, who has recently gone on his own and left his role as Robin behind. This was due to Alfred Pennyworth's death, the butler and surrogate father to nearly every member of the Bat-Family. While Batman and the former Robin headed to save their family from Hush, Batman realizes that the center of all things in his life and every meaningful moment he has involves his family.

While Batman saves the Bat-Family from Hush, the Dark Knight was naturally angry that his former friend Tommy would go after his family in such a manner. Hush's answer is very on-brand with regards to his past: he never cared about his own family, so why should Batman expect Hush to care about his? While it's cool to see this issue carrying such a significant focus on family as Batman's strength, it's hard to not see the cost as well. Not only was Batman's family used against him and put in danger, his inability to be open and vulnerable has also put him at odds with his own family. Likewise, as soon as Hush is defeated Damian departs, still not ready to come back into the fold.

Thanks to the new status quo shift after the Joker WarBatman does not have the resources he once had. That creates the perfect opportunity for the Dark Knight to rely on his Bat-Family even more than he has in the past... if he chooses to. Hopefully, Batman will reach out as this issue of Detective Comics seems to indicate, despite the risks and struggles that come with it.
