"Spelling Bee" is one of Will Forte's best sketches on Saturday Night Live, and is capped off by a Tenacious D cameo. Prior to joining the cast of Saturday Night Live in season 28, Will Forte was better known as a comedy writer, having worked on shows like That '70's Show and God, The Devil And Bob. Forte was typically the highlight of any skits he appeared in on the show, and his MacGyver parody MacGruber soon became an audience favorite. Forte later played the character in a 2010 spinoff movie of the same name, but while it has a loyal fandom now, it was a box-office dud during its original release.
Will Forte left Saturday Night Live shortly after the movie's release, and in the years since has won acclaim for movies like Irish drama Run & Jump and sitcom The Last Man On Earth. Alongside MacGruber, one of Forte's best sketches during his SNL tenure was "Spelling Bee." The extremely simple premise sees Forte as a meek boy named Daniel taking part in a spelling bee who is stumped by the word "business."
Daniel stalls for time, asking for the definition, meaning and origin from Chris Parnell's (Rick And Morty) Moderator, before eventually asking him to just spell it. His options exhausted, Forte then embarks on a minute-long attempt to spell business, which involves a large selection of q's; needless to say, he's wrong. Saturday Night Live's "Spelling Bee" is made all the funnier by how straight Forte and Parnell play it, as there's no smirking or breaking character.
Saturday Night Live's "Spelling Bee" ends with the surprise appearance of Tenacious D - well, it's not that major a surprise as Jack Black hosted this 2005 episode - who sing a song about Daniel's failure. The sketch was part of a strong episode overall, as it also featured The Lonely Island's classic "Lazy Sunday" rap, performed by Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell. The duo raps about heading to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe while eating cupcakes, and it quickly went viral after the episode aired.
