The Mandalorian: 10 Questions About Cara Dune Fans Need Answers To

The Mandalorian continues to introduce all kinds of new characters into the galaxy of Star Wars with every episode. One of the most fascinating remains Cara Dune, a former Rebel shock trooper turned mercenary. There has never really been a character like her before in Star Wars, and few are so tantalizingly vague.

Dune so far has given few clues to her background and history and with each new episode she appears in, only generates more questions. The hugely popular Disney+ series seems to be playing the long game with all its mysteries, but that doesn't stop fans from wanting the answers.

10 What Is A Shock Trooper?

When Cara Dune first appeared in Chapter 3 of The Mandalorian, she revealed herself to be a former Rebel shock trooper. This was a surprise, as previously, this class of soldiers hadn't been associated with the Rebellion in canon (there were Republic Clone Shock Trooper variants).

Fans don't know a ton about them, such as what they wore for uniforms or how they were organized. Cara Dune only said they hunted Imperial warlords and other remnants of the Empire following the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi.

9 Did Cara Dune Ever Go After Moff Gideon?

One of those Imperial warlords that refused to surrender after the death of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader was Moff Gideon. The primary villain of The Mandalorian has been consolidating power in the Outer Rim and creating a strange Dark Trooper army. Did Cara Dune ever go after him?

It's unclear, though Gideon clearly knows who she is, as indicated in the first season finale. Given the power Gideon wields, it seems likely he would be a high-value target for Rebel shock troops post-Endor. One of the ways the show can fill in the blanks between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens is to explore these questions.

8 Did She Fight At The Battle of Endor?

Cara Dune has only made reference to her activities post-Battle of Endor. It's unclear if she participated in the actual battle itself. It seems likely she was part of the Rebellion at this point, given that she is an Alderaan survivor.

Given the fact that Rebels were all in on this major battle, it seems likely she was present for this decisive engagement in some capacity. If she wasn't, it would be just one more thing that doesn't make sense about Return of the Jedi.

7 Does She Know Princess Leia?

Cara Dune is a member of an exclusive, tragic club. She hails from Alderaan, a peaceful world destroyed by the first Death Star in Star Wars. It's not entirely clear how many Alderaan citizens survived the incident while off-world, but the number is woefully small. It begs the question if Cara Dune knew the most prominent survivor in the fleet: Princess Leia.

Given Dune's service and the relatively small size of the Rebellion, it's entirely possible they crossed paths. In the 2015 Marvel Comics story Star Wars: Princess Leia, Leia led a mission to rescue the remaining survivors of the planet. Dune didn't appear there, as she had yet to be created.

6 What Does Cara Dune's Tattoo Mean?

Cara Dune is intriguing for a lot of reasons. One of the most obvious is her tattoos. Dune has two. One is a small Rebel insignia under her eye. The other is a segmented band around her arm.

Neither has gotten any explanation in the series so far, though actress Gina Carano hinted in an interview that the eye tattoo has 'a much deeper meaning.' So far, the meaning behind the tattoo has yet to be revealed. Theories abound for The Mandalorian, and the reason behind her ink is just one.

5 Why Exactly Did She Leave The New Republic?

The Mandalorian takes place roughly five years after the Battle of Endor, but fans don't have a solid sense yet of Cara Dune's timeline. They also don't know why she left the New Republic.

She told Din Djarin she left after the Rebellion mopped up those Imperial warlords and also suppressed riots. She didn't give a specific reason why she left other than once the fighting was done, protecting diplomats wasn't what she signed on for. Was there more to it than just wanting to keep fighting?

4 What Did She Do After?

When Cara Dune first meets the Mandalorian on the planet of Sorgan, she confuses him for being there to capture her bounty. That suggests that Dune wasn't up to a ton of good after getting her discharge. Fans know she worked as a mercenary, but it's not clear in what capacity.

Was she a contract killer? Muscle? A bounty hunter herself? Who put a bounty on her? It would be fascinating to know if she came into contact with established criminal syndicates like Crimson Dawn.

3 What Kind Of Weapon Does She Use?

Cara Dune proved herself a serious hand to hand combatant when she fought Din Djarin to a stalemate during the first encounter. She is also clearly an expert when it comes to weapons. She carries a distinctive hand blaster at all times, but her signature weapon so far has been her heavy blaster rifle.

While the rifle doesn't appear to have an in-universe designation, it's based on a real-world weapon: the Bren Mk1 with MG34 style magazines. Almost all Star Wars weapons are constructed from real ones, often drawing heavily from World War II.

2 Will She Go Back To The New Republic?

At the end of the most recent episode, Chapter 12, Cara Dune received an intriguing offer. New Republic X-Wing pilot Captain Carson Teva (played by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, responsible for some of the funniest quotes from Kim's Convenience) offers Dune to return to the New Republic.

Dune declines, preferring to stay on as marshal on Nevarro. It does raise the prospect that she may eventually, as the Empire continues to resist complete collapse in the Outer Rim territories.

1 Who Is Cara Dune?

The biggest question fans have about Cara Dune is just who is she? Outside of the fact she's a former soldier and mercenary, next to nothing is known about her.

She clearly likes to fight and can, but does her inability to function in peacetime speak to a fault in her character? Is she potentially a villain? Is she more closely connected to the villains of the show than fans realize? Does she have a more complicated past than just a burned-out soldier looking to fit in? Answers are likely, but it may be a while before they come.
