Update: Insomniac Games community director James Stevenson says that the line in question wasn't cut, but was likely interrupted by audio from a car chase in the embedded clip.
The PlayStation 5 remaster of Marvel’s Spider-Man has removed an Easter egg referencing this year’s Marvel’s Avengers. A next-gen update of Insomniac’s 2018 superhero sandbox adventure is currently being offered up as part of Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition, bringing beefed-up graphics and a few new alternate costumes to the game that has been deemed one of the best-selling superhero titles of all time.
Aside from the shiny new coat of paint, there are several changes to the PS5 version of Spider-Man that have made headlines and drawn fierce debate from fans. Chief among them is Peter Parker’s significantly altered face, which now resembles the MCU’s Tom Holland, although Insomniac insists that this is merely a coincidence. Now, one fan has pointed out a far less drastic but still very noteworthy change brought on by the jump to the new console, one that has more to do with the world Spidey operates in than what he looks like under the iconic red and black mask.
Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller posted a gameplay clip of the PS5 remaster of Marvel’s Spider-Man to Twitter earlier today, showing what happens when Spidey takes a picture of Avengers Tower as part of his Landmark sidequest. In the PS4 version, Peter comments that the Avengers are “never around to use" their shiny base of operations and notes that his fellow superheroes are currently “on the West Coast or something.” This is an implied reference to Square Enix’s recent Marvel’s Avengers, where Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are stationed in San Francisco during an attack by AIM. However, the PS5 remaster removes the reference to the West Coast, as demonstrated in both Miller’s clip and a sequent post transcribing the PS4 quote below:
The reason for this alternation is unknown, but it is most likely due to Crystal Dynamics’ announcements regarding Spider-Man’s forthcoming appearance as a DLC character in the PS4 version of Marvel’s Avengers. Despite some early speculation that the Spidey featured in this still-in-development expansion would be the same one featured in Insomniac's games, it was later confirmed that this wouldn't be the case and that Avengers is set in its own continuity.
As such, Insomniac possibly removed the explicit reference to the West Cost in the PS5 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man to further separate the two games while still keeping Avengers Tower itself as a fun Easter egg to the larger Marvel Universe. However, the fact that this reference has included in the first place might be a sign that Marvel’s Avengers was indeed originally meant to tie into Insomniac’s Spider-Man titles as many have speculated in the past, only for this to be changed later. In any case, fans will be able to take in the sights while playing the PS5 remaster of Marvel’s Spider-Man when it hits stores as part of the Ultimate Edition of Spider-Man: Miles Morales tomorrow.
