DCEU: 5 Reasons Wonder Woman & Steve Trevor Are The Best Couple (& 5 They Should Break Up)

The biggest appeal for fans to watch Wonder Woman 1984 might just be the chance to see the titular superhero and Steve Trevor together once again. This pairing was huge among audiences and Steve’s return has been met with unanimous excitement as their romance is back on track.

However, it’s not like Steve and Wonder Woman’s love story was without any flaws. Quite the contrary, as there were some issues that could have even led to their break-up. Still, one can’t overlook just how much these two were in love. So, let’s see where they were the best and where it isn’t the case.

10 BREAK-UP: She Became Too Emotionally Dependent On Him

Wonder Woman’s relationship with Steve Trevor is a key detail from the comics. However, there’s no denying that being in love with him robbed her of any chance to open up to love again. In fact, she ended up considering him as the only one with whom she could share an emotional connection.

This isn’t really a healthy thing for a relationship since it gives way to extreme codependency and an identity crisis. If their relationship had progressed this way had Steve not died, it would have been far better to break it off rather than have two people who couldn’t function without each other.

9 BEST: They Opened Up To One Another Quickly

It’s incredible how these two didn’t have a problem sharing their likes, dislikes, and even insecurities with one another considering the way they met. Once the initial shock of being among Amazons subsided, Steve had no problem being himself around her and it went the same for Wonder Woman as well.

She could tell him everything about her issues with the world, even if he didn’t know how to fully respond. Likewise, Steve was able to embrace his never-say-die attitude when he saw that Wonder Woman shared this sentiment with him.

8 BREAK-UP: Their Relationship Was Based Around Sacrifice

In case you don’t remember, recapping the plot points from the previous film will bring up the fact that both of them were very much open to sacrificing their lives the whole time. It was this that bonded them in a way, as there was never any pressure of being together since they didn’t expect to.

That’s not the best foundation for a relationship, though, seeing as neither actually knew what it was like to be in it for love rather than a battle. Had the sacrificial aspect been removed, it’s likely they would have been headed for a break-up.

7 BEST: They Brought Laughter To One Another In Times Of Distress

There was a World War going on around the time this pair met, and yet it was easily the best days of their lives. It comes down to Steve and Wonder Woman bringing smiles to each other’s faces, something that didn’t seem possible during such times of distress.

If one is able to make another happy in such a backdrop, then there’s no doubt they might just be that special person. There haven’t been such relationships in the DCEU either, making this point even more pronounced in this couple’s favor.

6 BREAK-UP: He Didn't Take Her Seriously Until Much Later

One of the mistakes from the DCEU the next film needs to avoid is bringing characters together based on unclear motives. This was the case for Wonder Woman and Steve, as he didn’t take her issues with Ares seriously and only used her motivation to his own needs.

While it wasn’t done with any malicious intent, it wasn’t a true sentiment on his part either. Had Wonder Woman understood that he wasn’t being honest, there would have definitely been a problem between them since he didn’t take her word and had to see Ares to believe her.

5 BEST: They're Each Other's True Love

There’s no argument when it comes to the topic of the best DCEU couples that Steve and Wonder Woman are included in this list. At the end of the day, it’s a fact that they fell in love completely and that it was a genuine feeling shared.

Steve had never expected to survive, much less fall in love and he admitted that he wished they had more time before parting from her. Wonder Woman’s feelings go without saying, seeing as she held on to her love for Steve even a century after his demise.

4 BREAK-UP: Their Backgrounds Are Far Too Different

Steve is just a normal human while Wonder Woman has more powers than most are even aware of. Their compatibility doesn’t work on paper since he just can’t keep up with her vast array of powers and the fact that she comes from a tribe fully comprised of women.

Although she did go against the ideals she was raised with, Wonder Woman’s personality was still essentially where she came from. Steve probably wouldn’t have been able to grasp this in the long-run, making a break-up a definite possibility.

3 BEST: They Make Each Other Understand Their Ideals

Sure, while Steve didn’t take her word seriously about how Ares was one of the baddest beings out there and how her powers worked, there’s also evidence that he did respect her. Due to his feelings for Wonder Woman, Steve was willing to let her guide him and felt she was capable of saving the world.

In the same vein, Wonder Woman understood how the world of humans worked because of Steve, whom she considered to be the best of what humanity could ever offer. Theirs was a perfect blend of respect and understanding.

2 BREAK-UP: There Was Never A Future For Them

Maybe the next film will take the time to answer the unresolved question of how Steve and Wonder Woman would have even been as a couple. This is mainly due to Wonder Woman being an immortal who was around a thousand years older than him. In the long-run, Steve would have never been able to be with her truly, as a human ages and passes away.

There were a lot of issues relating to hiding Diana’s identity to their different physiologies to tackle. After all, had Steve even survived the film’s events, he would still have died naturally long before the events of either Wonder Woman 1984 and Justice League. With this in mind, perhaps the two would have broken up rather than suffer any heartbreak.

1 BEST: They Were Their Best When With Each Other

Steve was burdened with a lack of assertiveness and clear execution of his goals, while Wonder Woman didn’t understand how she could save the world. It was when they were together that either character could figure this out as they brought the best out in each other.

Had they never crossed paths, neither Steve nor Wonder Woman would have gotten the purpose in life they desired. In this case, it was truly better to have loved and lost. As they ultimately did achieve great things, their entire relationship was well worth it in the end.
