In a world full of industries and companies directing their material at adults, Disney aims at kids and families. But for such a family-friendly company, it's quite surprising how many times the company has frequently and purposefully terrified their viewers.
As well as being home to some of the most enjoyable animated features, the company has supplied several of its consumers with some seriously nasty nightmares. Disney is always bright and cheerful on a daily basis but when they want to be scary, they are certainly more than capable.
10 Snow White’s Freaky Forest
The first of Walt Disney Pictures animated masterpieces took the world by storm but like every good fairytale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had plenty of heart with a sprinkling of horror.
The scene with the evil trees, crocodiles, and at legions of evil eyes in the haunted forest was definitely something not expected from Walt Disney. It just goes to show what can be accomplished with ink and paint.
9 Heeeeeere’s Donny!
Speaking of moments definitely non-Disney-like, Donald Duck is hilarious when he's angry, isn't he? He's like a kid throwing a tantrum who sounds like an angry whoopie cushion. But when he gets hangry... people get hurt.
Anger and hunger are two emotions that should never mix, and Donald proves it. In Mickey and the Beanstalk, the brink of starvation drives him to nearly ax-murder an innocent cow. Thank Walt Mickey and Goofy could get him under control.
8 The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
There's a certain stigma about Disney adapting literary works, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow segment from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad Is surprisingly faithful to the book. That also includes the appearance of the Headless Horseman in the third act. The climax of the ghostly tale one of the scariest moments in all of Disney. From the creepy visuals to the Horseman's terrifying laugh, it's an animated nightmare.
7 Murderous Mombi
Disney Animation isn't the only place to find some serious scares. In the realms of live-action, Return to Oz is often the most discussed Disney fright-fest. There's a laundry list of reasons to consider this title quite scary, but few things are as terrifying as Princess Mombi.
An evil witch with a collection of living interchangeable heads, that's perfect for a movie set in the Merry Old Land of Oz, right? Not exactly something most fans would care to see on the Yellow Brick Road.
6 Disney's Horror Flick: The Watcher in the Woods
Remember when Disney made a horror movie? As strange as it sounds, it's absolutely true. Disney willingly, purposefully, and shockingly made a legitimate horror movie.
Although it's not exactly Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the idea of evil spirits stalking and scaring a family when they move into an eerie old country house sounds like the plot of an Evil Dead film. Props to Disney for making a mature and macabre experience.
5 The Curse of the Black Pearl
"Ye best start believin' in ghost stories, Miss Turner..." Who would have guessed that a movie inspired by a Disney Parks attraction would have made for such a fantastically freaky film?
Pirates who turn into zombie skeletons by the moonlight might sound silly at first, but they're no boneheads on the big screen. With an adventure with equal parts thrills and chills, is it any wonder the series took off?
4 Not-So-Happy Haunts
Not even the parks are safe from Disney's ghoulish appetites. While the original Haunted Mansion is spooky and a little silly, Phantom Manor of Disneyland Paris is easily classified as scary.
Known to the fandom as Haunted Mansion 2.0, Phantom Manor has several similarities with its American cousin, yet ups the scares with a family death curse, a murder mystery, and a tunnel full of zombies. Hitchhiking Ghosts are the least of one's worries here.
3 Night on Bald Mountain
Fantasia was arguably the first Disney film made more for adults than it was children. But even with that in mind, the "Night on Bald Mountain" segment was still something fans can't believe Walt approved.
The image of Chernabog (called Satan in the film) rising from the mountain top and summoning his minions of darkness from the fiery depths of the underworld is certainly not the wholesome depiction one would associate with the company.
2 Frollo's Flame
A little trouble with the fireplace is certainly an understatement. If there's one moment in a Disney film that terrified kids of the '90s, it's "Hellfire." on one hand, it's possibly the most memorable song in the entirety of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
On the other, it's a musical expression of lust, sin, and eternal damnation, and all under the name of the mouse. How did this film get a G rating again?
1 The Black Cauldron
Imagine a Disney film so scary that it almost warranted an R rating as a whole! It was so out of Disney's repertoire that it nearly killed the studio.
There has yet to be a villain so terrifying as the Horned King or a force of evil so fearsome as the Cauldronborn Army to come from Disney animation. But with all that in mind, it's also one of the many reasons to still give this film a watch today.
