Doctor Who Animated Spinoff Clip Shows A Dalek Invasion

The BBC has released a new trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who animated spinoff series starring the Daleks. It may have been months since a new episode aired on TV, but Doctor Who is currently caught up in the biggest transmedia event in the show's history. "Time Lord Victorious" is an epic tale that runs through time and space, incorporating multiple incarnations of the Doctor. The story is told in multiple formats, from audio dramas to comic books, from novels to an innovative escape room.

In September, the BBC announced a new CGI-animated series centered around the Doctor's iconic enemies, the Daleks. Compromised of five 10-minute episodes, Daleks! will release on the Doctor Who YouTube channel in November. Its voice cast features Nicholas Briggs (who voices the Daleks in Doctor Who), Joe Sugg, Anjli Mohindra, and Ayesha Antoine. Little has yet been revealed about the story, but it will apparently see the Daleks unwittingly awaken something ancient and deadly - a threat so great even the Daleks may not be able to defeat it.

As part of New York Comic Con 2020, BBC Studios held a digital panel dedicated to the Time Lord Victorious project. There, they released an exclusive clip from Daleks! episode 1, as the Daleks invade the planet Islos. This is described as an archive planet, suggesting the Daleks aren't just committing another random act of genocide - rather, they are seeking information from the archives.

The animated style won't be to everybody's taste, but it's actually a homage to the classic TV Century 21 comic books. These presented the origin story for the Daleks, spinning out of the second Doctor Who serial in which they were introduced, and they established a lot of the basics of Dalek combat. It's going to be exciting to see those concepts brought to life.

Of course, the intriguing question is just what the Daleks are up against. "Time Lord Victorious" comics have already seen the Daleks driven back to Skaro by the Hond, a race who were wiped out in the days the universe was young, but who have mysteriously returned now that time is in a state of flux. The Daleks were forced to recruit the Doctor himself as their defender, and he successfully saved their homeworld Skaro from destruction. But it looks as though the Hond are not the only ancient force stirring as a result of the events of "Time Lord Victorious," leaving the Daleks up against threats they have never encountered before. That would explain why the story of this Doctor Who animated spinoff begins with their invading an archive planet - seeking to learn just what it is they're up against.
