Cobra Kai not only brings back many familiar faces from The Karate Kid movies but it also expands the universe with a huge cast of all-new characters. Created by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, Cobra Kai is set 34 years after the original Karate Kid and the continuation series turns the saga into a generational tale. Originally a YouTube original series, Cobra Kai seasons 1 and 2 are now on Netflix, with season 3 arriving in 2021.
Cobra Kai reignites the rivalry between Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) that began when they were in high school in 1984. Down on his luck Johnny decides to recapture his former glory by restarting the Cobra Kai dojo, and he reluctantly takes in his nerdy next-door neighbor Miguel Diaz (Xolo Mariduena) as his first student. Meanwhile, Daniel has become a successful businessman and a happily married family man — but when Daniel realizes Cobra Kai, the source of his teenage torment, has suddenly returned, he decides to do whatever it takes to stop Johnny. This includes Daniel also restarting Miyagi-Do Karate and teaching new students, including his daughter Samantha (Mary Mouser) and Johnny's estranged son Robby (Tanner Buchanan), the style of karate he was taught by his late sensei Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita).
Season 1 of Cobra Kai mixed plenty of welcome Karate Kid nostalgia with a smoothly escalating story that brings Johnny and Daniel's animosity into the present-day, which quickly draws in their respective students. By Cobra Kai season 2, even more teenagers from Sam and Miguel's high school join the respective dojos, which inevitably erupts into a full-on dojo war beyond Johnny and Daniel's control. Johnny's control over Cobra Kai is also threatened when his sinister old sensei, John Kreese (Martin Kove) returns to his life. Cobra Kai has a sprawling cast that promises to get even bigger in season 3; here's the returning and new characters in Cobra Kai seasons 1 and 2.
