There are few shows born in the 21st century as hilarious and underappreciated as Scrubs, a show that for eight seasons made fans laugh, cry, and crave an Eagle. The show had a terrific cast to partner up with the genius writing of the show, and they were all unbelievably funny, but few were more so than Neil Flynn as the Janitor.
As fans of the excellent Fake Doctors, Real Friends With Zach + Donald podcast can attest, Flynn was so funny that a lot of the time of his lines were improvised, and on top of continuously being hilarious, there are a variety of ways the Janitor got better and better.
10 Spoke To More People Than Just J.D.
There is a longstanding theory/story about the Janitor in season one of the show that he only spoke with J.D. and was only seen by J.D. because he was nothing more than a figment of J.D.'s imagination.
However, while he does only have real communication with J.D. for a while, he soon begins talking to far more than just him, with people like Turk, Elliot, Carla, Kelso, Cox, and his own maintenance team, and, of course, Troy. All of this improving his character and allowing him to expand his hilarity horizons.
9 More Of A Role On The Show
Neil Flynn was never meant to be a main character of the show, nor even a regular, but after being so great, he was cast as a full time regular of the show and became one of the primary seven.
The more Janitor, the better for the show as he made every episode that little bit funnier, whether it be with a storyline throughout the episode, or just popping in with some jokes.
8 Got Rid Of The Squirrels
One of the most significant issues with the Janitor is he often alluded to capture, killing, and stuffing of animals, particularly squirrels. It was disconcerting and would quickly put many of his characters.
There is a possibility the army of squirrels he accumulated did not exist, but the evidence backs up that he does. Nevertheless, Janitor gets rid of them eventually, in helping Carla with Rowdy. The furry army is not brought up much after that, thankfully.
7 Friendships
Going hand-in-hand with having more of a role in the show, Janitor created many unique friendships/relationships around the hospital, from his brain trust to his crush on Elliot, to his bar-based friendship with Cox.
Friendship always adds to characters, and the Janitor is no different. It is a prominent aspect of the show, the theme of the song literally points to the fact the characters cannot survive on their own, and the storylines and moments that come with the Janitor getting involved in other people's lives led to a lot of laughs.
6 Bond With Elliot
The Janitor's crush on Elliot got mentioned above. Throughout the show, it became so much more than a crush, and also led to perhaps the first genuine look at the humanity and emotion of the Janitor.
Seeing the Janitor admit his feelings for Elliot as well as his appreciation for how she treats him was tear-inducing. After that, the two are good friends, and there appears to be genuine care there that is heartwarming.
5 Opened Up More
The Janitor telling Elliot of his feelings is one significant part of the Janitor's character opening up throughout the show. While he often cannot get trusted, there are a few real, salt of the Earth moments from him.
Admitting to J.D., he was in The Equaliser springs to mind; there is also when he gets worried about Lady possibly leaving him. These moments do not come that often, but when they do, they are a joy to watch.
4 Showed He Cared About The Hospital
Another huge moment of the Janitor opening up is probably the most emotional Janitor moment of all time, and that is when he meets Mr. McNair in "His Story III."
After helping Carla with a patient, and hearing him getting mocked by Doctors, the Janitor tells McNair about how he genuinely wants to make a difference and cares about the hospital. On top of that, a more lighthearted example of his care is when he gets fired and refuses to let go of the place.
3 Meeting Lady
Perhaps the most out of nowhere romance on Scrubs was that between the Janitor and Ladinia Williams, a.k.a Lady, a surprisingly wholesome love.
It is unknown how exactly the pair met each other, but they did, and it improved Janitor's life as he loved her a lot as their relationship developed, and they opened up to each other, revealing their true selves.
2 His Lies
The Janitor is a pathological liar, and throughout his time on the show, he lies about everything from his job, J.D.'s life, his hobbies, his family, and various other things.
Being a liar itself is not great, but it also leads to some hilarious Janitor moments. On top of that, it gets far easier to see the Janitor's lies as time gets on, so when a nugget of truth comes out, an emotional moment is improved massively.
1 Getting Married To Lady
The Janitor's seemingly impromptu wedding in Barbados, which was intended just for people to give gifts and not actually come, led to a great couple of episodes.
As mentioned earlier, Janitor and Lady's relationship was one that was so shocking, and the fact that it got this far was truly wholesome. The two clearly have an insane love for each other, and the fact they will spend the rest of their life together is great.
