Captain America Gets His Own Independence Day Speech

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Empyre: Captain America #3

Captain America is the embodiment of heroism, and is often looked upon to inspire the Avengers and rally the heroes of the Marvel Universe against all kinds of threats. That being said, he's gotten really good at motivational speeches. In Marvel's Empyre, Cap has been leading the U.S military against the invading Cotati forces, and gets the perfect opportunity to give one of those classic speeches to rally the troops. Given the context here, it's pretty hard not to compare it to actor Bill Pullman's iconic speech in the film Independence Day, where aliens were invading, and the militaries of the world united to face them.

In Independence Day, President Whitmore (Bill Pullman) gathers the militaries of the world in the last ditch attempt to repel the invading forces, providing one of the most epic speeches of all time. The day of the offensive itself is July 4th, hence the name of the film. Therefore, President Whitmore reclassifies the national American holiday, instead changing it to a day of global independence from the alien invaders. A day where mankind would fight for its right to live. A day where they wouldn't go quietly into the night, nor vanish without a fight. He tells the troops that they are going to live on, survive, and that today they will celebrate their new Independence Day. Likewise, Captain America offers a bold speech of motivation in a similar fashion in Empyre: Captain America #3, written by Phillip K. Johnson with art by Ariel Olivetti.

Captain America also shares with the American troops that they are unequivocally in the right for their offensive against the Cotati, reminding the soldiers that they not fighting for land, resources, religion, or politics, some of the larger reason behind most wars. Instead, they're fighting for every single man, woman, and child on the planet, which makes their cause right from any angle.

It's a very rousing and inspirational speech, one that would be expected from the Super Solider. It was definitely needed as well, as the Cotati have unleashed a giant moving mountain of a creature upon Mexico City, requiring every single soldier to give everything they have to win the day. If that wasn't bad enough, Captain America's allies, the Kree and Skrull united empire, stand ready to blow up the city at a moment's notice should Captain America and his fellow human fail to repel the Cotati forces.

All in all, Cap manages to take out the primary Cotati general and destroy the living mountain, saving the day alongside the U.S forces. However, Captain America doesn't get any time to rest, as reports have just come from NATO that Wakanda is under siege. Will Captain America go to assist his fellow heroes alone, or will he bring the full might of the U.S military with him? It's hard to say but either way, Captain America knows how to give one hell of a speech.
