10 Best: Kramer Vs Kramer (7.8)
One of Meryl Streep’s earliest films saw her land a role alongside Dustin Hoffman in this well-loved legal drama. It focuses on the idea of divorce and the psychology that surrounds it, touching on political ideas, like women’s rights and gender roles.
The film picked up five nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Streep - pretty impressive when you consider that her film career had only started two years earlier.
9 Worst: Plenty (6.0)
Despite an impressive British cast (including Sting and Ian McKellen), Plenty didn’t hit the spot.
The 1985 drama cast Meryl Streep in the lead role, Susan Traherne, whose life over 20 years is followed after she meets a British intelligence agent during World War II. Roger Ebert might have been a fan, but reviews have remained mixed since 1985.
8 Best: Manhattan (7.9)
Despite only starting her career in the late 70s, those few years were an incredibly important and overwhelmingly impressive time in Streep’s career.
Manhattan, shot in black and white and featuring the music of George Gershwin, is remembered as one of the best romantic comedies of all time. It was one of many films that Woody Allen both directed and starred in across his wide-ranging career.
7 Worst: Ricki And The Flash (5.9)
One of Streep’s most recent works is one that certainly doesn’t match the excellence of her earlier career. Despite Streep working with Kevin Kline on the likes of Sophie’s Choice, the pair fail to have any impact within this lifeless, cliched attempt at a musical.
The reception was mixed on the whole, but critics found huge flaws in the general execution of the film, while the box office results spoke for themselves.
6 Best: Fantastic Mr. Fox (7.9)
There is a lot of great stuff littered throughout the long list of Roald Dahl big-screen adaptations. Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of those gems that is impossible not to love. Much of this probably comes down to the directorial talent of Wes Anderson (for whom this was his first animated venture) and an impressive voice cast, which included the pairing of Meryl Streep and George Clooney.
While it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but it had the misfortune of being released in the same year as Up.
5 Worst: Into The Woods (5.9)
One of the many attempts at bringing the fairytale universe together into one shared world was the fateful Into The Woods. It previously existed as a successful stage play, but didn’t make its way to the screen with success, despite a massive budget and a seriously impressive cast.
Despite criticism from fans, Streep was singled out for her performance and nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards.
4 Best: Little Women (7.9)
Another Meryl Streep’s most recent films to feature on this list actually makes its way into her five best films of all time.
While Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson are the faces at the center of the film (which is the seventh version of Louisa May Alcott’s 1968 novel), Streep’s heart-breaking role as Aunt March is still key.
3 Worst: The Ant Bully (5.8)
Ant-based films had proven themselves a success in the late 90s, so a return to this style of animation was a sure-fire hit. Except it wasn’t. The Ant Bully was released just after DNA Productions went out of business, and the very disappointing box office returns weren’t even able to provide consolation.
As always, Streep’s voice acting was praised, but it wasn’t enough to get the film reviews that went above average.
2 Best: The Deer Hunter (8.1)
The top of Meryl Streep’s best films ever list returns once more to that flurry of incredible roles she landed in the late 70s, just as her film career had begun.
The Deer Hunter put her opposite Robert De Niro in a supporting role that marked her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The exceptionally long war drama is often considered one of the greatest films ever made.
1 Worst: She-Devil (5.6)
According to IMDb, the worst role Meryl Streep ever undertook was the co-starring role of Mary Fisher in She-Devil, a 1989 comedy directed by Susan Seildelman.
While Streep and her co-star Roseanne Barr were praised for their performances, the tone and general quality of the film itself was criticized. Even so, Streep managed yet another Golden Globe nomination for stealing the show. That’s a seriously impressive list of accolades for one career.
