The next Adventure Time: Distant Lands special is going to focus on the relationship between the characters Marceline and Princess Bubblegum. This special will be titled “Obsidian” and will be released on HBO Max as the second of four special episodes of the cartoon following the original show’s conclusion.
In a recent Comic-Con at Home panel, Olivia Olson, the voice of Marceline, gave some hints as to what the story of this special will be like. Olson expressed that she was very excited about the script and that it would answer a lot of questions about the Bubblegum/Marceline relationship. Olson hints that Marceline will have to overcome some personal emotional walls and learn to let the people she cares about into her life. There will also be new Marceline songs, each taking place in a different period of Marceline’s life, from childhood to adulthood. You can hear a preview of one of these songs in the video below, around 35:14. There will also be new characters introduced in this special, including a character named “Glassboy,” voiced by Michaela Dietz.
Executive producer Adam Muto explained the special’s title, stating that “Obsidian” is a reference to the setting of the episode, which takes place in the previously unexplored Glass Kingdom. “Obsidian is a type of natural glass,” Muto notes. “Spiritually it can be protective and absorb negativity, but it can also be weaponized.” He goes on to explain that the obsidian metaphor relates to what we’ll be seeing of Marceline and Princess Bubblegum’s relationship, stating that the audience will get to see “snapshots” of their romance in the past and the problems they’ve had to overcome. It appears that the entire crew behind Adventure Time: Distant Lands is just excited for this next special to be released.
