The Korean film industry has been given considerable coverage since Parasite (2019) won the Academy Award for Best Picture earlier this year. Director Bong Joon-ho's crowning achievement is creating a movie that somehow works equally well for the average cinema-goer and the harshest critic.
Along those lines of duality, the characters in Parasite are neither endearing nor abhorrent. All of them, from the wealthiest (who prey on the world) to the poorest (who prey on the wealthy) are in it for the same thing — a comfortable life in a cruel world. The zodiac signs will help identify some of their key characteristics and motivations.
12 Aries - Kim Chung-sook
Chung-sook, the mother of the poor Kim household, has a harsh personality (reflective of her living conditions.) She exhibits various tendencies of the Aries sign, especially in terms of resolve.
For instance, when Chung-sook realizes that her entire family is soon going to be out on the streets — because Moon-gwang, the previous housekeeper, is about to spill the beans to the Park family — she coldly kicks the other woman down the stairs without a second thought.
11 Taurus - Kim Ki-jung
It is evident that Ki-jung is the smartest of the lot, taking into account all three families living in that house. She is a classic Taurus, given her incredible confidence, predicting events in Da-Song's life that she shouldn't have known.
Ki-jung effortlessly pretends to be an art therapist, which she later claims she Googled right before her meeting with Mrs. Park. Her aspirations are noted by her brother, who comments that she is the only Kim family member who doesn't seem out of place in the rich home.
10 Gemini - Park Da-hye
Da-hye, the daughter of the Park family, displays the ennui most commonly observed in rich teenagers. Even though Ki-woo has been hired to tutor her, she prefers to sexualize her learning sessions. As a Gemini, however, Da-hye is more than what the world thinks of her.
Instead of acting like a spoiled brat when things don't go her away, she is seen carrying the severely injured Ki-woo to get help. By doing this, Da-hye shows that she cares less for her inheritance than the boy she loves.
9 Cancer - Park Dong-ik
Dong-ik, the Park patriarch, is generally polite on the outside, but shows his self-centered side in the company of his wife (when they accuse, try, and pass judgment on their previous chauffeur, Yoon, for a crime he never commits.)
He personifies the Cancer traits of snobbery and contempt for those he deems beneath him, like his open disgust at the so-called "poor man's odor" coming from Ki-taek, his new chauffeur. Dong-ik is loyal, as expected of his sign, but limits it to his family — hurrying his son to a doctor even when a girl is dying on his front lawn.
8 Leo - Yoon
Yoon has a short-lived appearance in the film, mainly as a pawn used by Ki-jung to get her family more firmly entrenched in the Park's good books.
From what is known of his personality, it is clear that he is a Leo, considering his sheer gall when he insists that he wants to drop Jessica all the way home. There is a sexual implication hidden beneath his request, indicating the passion he reserves for his attempts at wooing women.
7 Virgo - Kim Ki-woo (Kevin)
Being a Virgo, Ki-woo is a quiet, gentle boy who blames fate for his family's miseries. He struggles to match the flawless act of his sister (often being coached by her on how to behave.) However, Ki-woo isn't much for complaining about his lot in life, but rather works to fix it.
The final scenes of the movie are composed of his promises: making a lot of money, buying the house and rescuing his father, an extreme extension of the Virgo capacity for imagination.
6 Libra - Park Da-song
Da-song is meant to be the stereotypical spoiled child, but his character has a lot more depth to it than what is depicted on-screen. For instance, consider Ki-jung's question to Mrs. Park (the relationship between his "artwork" and the monster in the dark.)
In true Libra form, Da-song spends most of his time in his own head, but that doesn't mean he isn't aware of what's going on. In fact, he is the only one who manages to consider that the blinking lights above the stairway is Morse code.
5 Scorpio - Gook Moon-gwang
The scariest character in the film is Moon-gwang, the stern housekeeper dethroned by the Kims using a complicated plan involving peaches and tuberculosis. She comes back, anyway, a Scorpio burning with rage and envy that another family was trying to leech off the same source as hers.
Moon-gwang is not a woman to be trifled with — the second she figures out Chung-sook's facade, her first thought, and consequent action, is to threaten the Kims with blackmail.
4 Sagittarius - Kim Ki-taek
Those blessed by Sagittarius tend to be as determined as they are ingenious. This is observed when Ki-taek carefully plants the seeds of doubt in Mrs. Park's mind (about Moon-gwang's alleged disease that he claims Da-song will contract.)
He is a generous person, or he tries to be one with Mr. Park, at least until the latter treats him like he belongs in the gutter. In line with his zodiac sign, Ki-taek is supremely certain of his place in life: he even tells his son that making plans is futile when the world is not built to suit people of their class.
3 Capricorn - Min-hyuk
Min-hyuk is Ki-woo's college friend, a glint of light in the darkness that envelops most poor people's lives. As a Capricorn, he proves to the Kim family that hard-work and intelligence are all it takes to succeed in life.
Min-hyuk is the spark that lights the fire, when he offers Ki-woo his own job as Da-hye's tutor (an act that clearly displays his sense of loyalty to his friend.) Most importantly, it is he who brings the Scholar Stone into the picture, a core symbol in the story, but he disappears soon after.
2 Aquarius - Park Yeon-kyo
Although Yeon-kyo is trapped in a life of uselessness by her own ridiculous wealth, her Aquarius nature makes itself evident on several occasions. For instance, her relationship with her husband still retains that initial fire (the one that most relationships start with, but soon gets doused by the drudgery of daily life.)
For a one-percenter, she happens to be surprisingly moral, like when she asks her husband if he's really sure that Yoon had sex with someone in their car.
1 Pisces - Oh Geun-sae
Geun-sae is surprisingly sensitive for a man who has spent several years in a moldy basement. Being a Pisces, he emits an aura of gentle gratitude, like sending up secret messages to Mr. Park for "allowing" him to live there.
However, when his wife and only protector is murdered by Chung-sook, he loses all interest in empathy and goes out on a rampage, killing Ki-jung and injuring Ki-taek in the process.
