Love, Victor: Is Nick Robinson's Simon In The Show? | Screen Rant

Hulu's Love, Victor is inspired by the movie Love, Simon, but does Simon (Nick Robinson) actually appear in the show? As a student at Creekwood High School struggling with his sexual identity, Victor (Michael Cimino) finds the story of former Creekwood student Simon declaring his love for another boy is something of a legend, so what role does Robinson's Simon play in Love, Victor season 1?

Love, Victor follows Victor as he begins life at his new school, Creekwood High. On top of juggling family drama and trying to find friends at his new school, Victor wrestles with a big secret - he thinks he might be gay. Victor heard the story of former Creekwood High student Simon declaring his love for a boy named Bram. In the Love, Simon spinoff, Victor connects with Simon on social media, and they begin exchanging messages. Victor looks to Simon for advice on navigating life at Creekwood High while juggling his secret.

Cimino and Robinson's voiceovers of their characters' messages serve as a narrative device for all of Love, Victor season 1. Because of that, Simon's presence looms over Victor's life, so it only makes sense that Robinson reprises his role as Simon in a brief cameo in Love, Victor's season 1 finale. But in order for the show to find its own voice, this should be the last appearance that Simon makes.

Simon finally makes a physical appearance near the end of Love, Victor's season 1 finale. Victor's social media relationship with Simon has become so important to him that he wants to meet Simon in person, he hops on a bus to New York City to finally meet Simon face-to-face. But as Simon is away at a bachelor party in New Jersey, Victor is taken in by his boyfriend and roommates. At the episode's emotional climax, Victor steps outside to get some fresh air, and he runs into Simon, who cut his trip short in order to meet his pen pal.

Robinson's voice and physical cameo in Love, Victor is the perfect way to pass the torch to a new generation of Creekwood High students. Love, Simon was a successful film, so it was a smart play to weave Simon into the thread of the show to grab audience's attention. But in order for the show to step out of the shadow of its predecessor, Simon's role should be phased out in a potential Love, Victor season 2. Simon's spirit and influence should remain a part of Victor's journey, but it's time for the Hulu show to stand on its own two feet.
