How Loki Really Learned Magic In The MCU | Screen Rant

How does Loki know magic in the MCU? Though not as talented as Doctor Strange, the adopted son of Odin and the God of Mischief is one of the most skilled sorcerers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but if his expertise in the magical arts isn't genetic, then it had to come from somewhere.

Since his first MCU appearance in 2011's Thor, magic has been Loki's greatest weapon. It's how he lives up to the title of "God of Mischief". With his magical abilities, Loki is capable of creating convincing illusions that can fool nearly everyone. He can also change his appearance to whatever he pleases, conjure mystical weapons out of thin air, move objects with his mind, and more. Loki's mastery of these skills has made him a formidable opponent for characters like Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) in Thor: Ragnarok, Captain America (Chris Evans) in The Avengers, and even Thor (Chris Hemsworth), despite the fact that the God of Thunder outmatches him physically.

How did Loki become such an expert in magic? A deleted scene in Thor: The Dark World confirms it was his adopted mother, Frigga (Rene Russo), who taught him this ability. Thor asked Frigga if she ever regretted sharing her magic with Loki. Frigga explained to Thor that since he and Odin "cast large shadows," she felt it was important that Loki have a special talent of his own.

Frigga being the one who taught him magic isn't surprising, considering she has been shown to be a capable sorceress in her own right, and there didn't seem to be any other Asgardian magic users available. Asgard's most powerful sorceress, the Enchantress, hasn't been introduced to the MCU yet. As for how Frigga herself knows magic, this was revealed in a later film. In Avengers: Endgame, it was briefly mentioned that she was raised by witches before getting to know Odin. That explains her own magical talents, and how she was able to cast spells in Thor: The Dark World. The knowledge she gained as a child was passed down to Loki, who ended up using it to pursue his own wicked goals.

How Loki knows magic in the MCU is different to what happened in the comic books. In Marvel Comics, Loki studied Asgardian magic independently, but gained his most powerful spells (which are from the school of dark magic) from an outside source. In the late 1980s, it was revealed that in his childhood years, Loki visited a wizard named Eldred, who recognized Loki's natural affinity for magic and taught him the dark arts. After learning what he needed to know from Eldred, Loki predictably betrayed his tutor, drained him of his magic to become stronger, and killed him. Thor: The Dark World's explanation, though, works for the MCU, because it makes sense for the characters. The relationship between Loki and Frigga was integral to the movie and Loki's character development. Loki truly cared for Frigga, and her death had a lot to do with his decision to become a better person.
