Batwoman Reveals Arrowverse's Batman: Who Plays Bruce Wayne

WARNING: Major SPOILERS ahead for the Batwoman season 1 finale, "O, Mouse!"

-

The CW's Batwoman finally reveals Bruce Wayne in the latest episode, unmasking the Arrowverse's Batman actor. Ever since Kate Kane aka Batwoman joined the Arrowverse, it was clear that her famous cousin Batman also existed in the shared universe of DC TV shows. When Ruby Rose debuted as Batwoman in the Elseworlds crossover event, she was already established as Gotham City's new caped crusader. It wasn't until the Batwoman TV show premiere that fans learned how Kate took over the cowl after her cousin Bruce Wayne had abandoned his role as Batman and left Gotham City, and hadn't returned in many years.

Still, with Batwoman confirming Batman existed in the Arrowverse it seemed only a matter of time before Kate Kane's cousin was revealed, even if he never donned his Batsuit. After all, Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson) did modify the Batsuit for Kate so she could become Batwoman. Even so, Bruce Wayne has loomed large in Batwoman season 1, with Batman being the superhero to which Kate constantly compares herself. Kate's cousin is also the person she talks to in her voice overs, which have become a unifying thread across the season. And now fans have a face to put with the Bruce Wayne name after the Batwoman season 1 finale, "O, Mouse!"

In the final scenes of Batwoman season 1, episode 20 (which serves as the show's season finale due to the Arrowverse production shutdowns), Alice (Rachel Skarsten) puts one of her skin masks on Tommy Elliott (Gabriel Mann), as she's been promising in exchange for him acquiring Lucius Fox's journal for her. But this particular mask is of Kate Kane's famous cousin, Bruce Wayne, who fans - and Alice - know to be Batman. The actor who plays the Arrowverse's Bruce Wayne aka Batman is Warren Christie (The Resident, Chicago Fire). Christie actually appeared in the Arrowverse before, playing Carter Bowen in the Arrow season 1 episode "Legacies."

Since Christie is only playing Tommy-as-Bruce Wayne in "O, Mouse!", it should be noted that this isn't the Arrowverse's real Batman debuting in Batwoman. It's unclear how long Tommy will stay disguised as Bruce, but this particular cliffhanger will no doubt be resolved in Batwoman season 2. As of this writing, it's not known whether the Batwoman writers intended for this particular arc to conclude in the original season 1 finale or continue longer. No matter what was originally planned, it seems fans will have to wait until Batwoman season 2 premieres in January 2021 to learn what happens next.

It could be that Tommy stays disguised as Bruce Wayne for the rest of his time on the show. Or Tommy taking on Kate and Alice's cousin's likeness may be the inciting incident that sees Batman finally return to Gotham City after so many years away. It would make sense for Batman to play a bigger role in Batwoman season 2 since Kate comparing herself to Bruce has been a recurring theme of season 1. Confronting the actual man, instead of the idea of the man, would be a compelling development for Kate's character and continued superheroics. Plus, properly introducing Batman in Batwoman season 2 follows what Supergirl did, leaving Superman to be fully introduced until the season 2 premiere.

Having Tommy disguised as Bruce Wayne is a compelling way to reveal the Arrowverse's Batman to fans, and set up the future return of the DC superhero himself. Viewers will have to wait and see how Batwoman season 2 picks up this particular cliffhanger, but for now, fans at least know what the Arrowverse's Bruce Wayne looks like, and who plays him.
